Steroid Induced Glaucoma: Pathogenesis

STEROID

Stabilization of lysosomal membranes à increased GAG
TIGR gene expression à decrease the MMP
Expression of collagen, elastin, laminin, fibronectin à increased TM resistance
Resistance to outflow increased due to biological edema caused by ECM –PG + GAG
Outflow-enhancing PGs such as PGF2α decreased
Inhibition of phagocytosis by endothelial cells à accumulation of debris in TM
Decreased proteinases including fibrinolytic enzymes, stromolysin, MMPs
